Materials

At Philz Guitars, the quality of our instruments begins with the materials we select. We source only the finest woods to ensure exceptional tone, resonance, and playability..

The Essence of Tone and Feel

Quality materials are fundamental to the tone, resonance, and sustain of an instrument. Our commitment to using only the best materials, directly influences the sound and feel of our guitars.

Soundboards

Soundboard material was sourced from Alaska. After using "bearclaw" (Hazelfichte) Sitka spruce for the first two soundboards, the decision to trial some Adirondack (Red spruce) on the third proved fortuitous; the resulting sound was even richer than the first two.

Fretboards

Ebony is a widely documented choice for fretboards and was the material used for the first two instruments. For the third, Indian rosewood was chosen for a number of reasons, proving a success. The decision was driven primarily by a small but significant weight reduction, supported by the material's rich figure.

Aesthetics

The use of Brazilian rosewood for the headstock faceplate and customised bridge strongly enriches the visual presentation of the frontal aspect.  The faceplate  is further enhanced by the use of maple edge banding, MOP (mother of pearl) brand inlay, and abalone decal.

Tying the sound-hole rosette to:

  1. the back & sides to by use of matching rosewood
  2.  the headstock by inclusion of abalone

provides further visual enhancement and continuity.
