Jointing

Jointing Techniques

Precise jointing is vital for the structural integrity, resonance, and longevity of a guitar. Different methods serve specific functions, balancing tradition and practicality.

Neck-to-Body Joint

Two primary approaches are commonly used:

  • Dovetail Joint – A traditional method ensuring a strong mechanical bond and excellent vibration transfer, enhancing sustain and tonal depth. (All Philz guitars utilize this joint.)
  • Bolt-on Neck Joint – Secured with screws or bolts, allowing easy removal for adjustments or repairs. Often favoured for its straightforward maintenance.

Neck-to-Headstock Joint

Several techniques are employed to achieve strength and optimal grain orientation, but at Philz Guitars, the preferred method is:

  • Scarf Joint – Designed for angled headstocks, this joint optimizes grain strength while minimizing material waste, contributing to durability and stability.

Body Edges

To securely joint the sides to the faces (top and back) in a strong, durable manner, the use of kerfing strips is essential. These strips reinforce the joint by providing a wider glue surface between the edges of the components, ensuring stability. Beyond structural support, kerfing also facilitates the insertion of purfling and edge banding into precisely routed rebates, allowing for refined aesthetic detailing.

Optimal Glues for Guitar Making

Various opinions prevail on this matter, with steadfast traditionalists favouring traditional hide glue. The primary argument in its favour is its setting hardness, which ensures optimal resonance transfer without sound dampening. While I acknowledge this perspective, the fact that hide glue has been shown to attract wood-boring insects is off-putting to me.

Aliphatic resin, (Titebond) while not setting to the same high degree of hardness as hide glue, offers practical advantages without the unwanted insect attraction. From experience, its use has shown little to no impact on acoustic transfer, resonance, or projection, making it my preferred choice.
