Preferred Timber Bending Techniques

Timber Bending in Lutherie

While various curve-forming techniques exist in woodworking, lutherie primarily relies on two key methods to shape guitar sides and other curved components with precision and consistency:

  1. Heated Bending Iron – A traditional technique where wood is manually shaped against a heated metal pipe. The heat softens the fibres, making them pliable, while controlled hand pressure achieves smooth curves. Spraying water or using dampened wood improves flexibility and reduces cracking. This method allows for greater hands-on control and is favoured for one-off or custom builds.
  2. Heated Blanket & Formers – A modern approach using an electrically heated silicone blanket to evenly distribute heat over the wood. The softened wood is then clamped into pre-shaped formers, ensuring uniform bends with minimal risk of breakage. This method is preferred for repeatability and efficiency, especially in professional workshops.

Each method offers advantages depending on precision needs, wood type, and production scale.
